Understanding Bosiny Surfboards
Welcome to our FAQ page. Here, we address the most common questions about our eco-friendly surfboards, and the techniques that we use to create high performance surfboards. Whether you're curious about our hollow wooden surfboards or need tips on surfboard care, you'll find the answers here.
Questions
Our boards are different in two main ways.
No foam core: we build a torsion box from laser cut paulownia components, in a way that is unique to Bosinys’ construction technique…
Outer skin: Traditional shapers apply layers of fibreglass and PU/Epoxy resin directly to the foam core. We also glass our boards (using fibreglass and 100% bio epoxy resin) but first we apply a thin skin of Paulownia wood bonded to a sublayer of Aramid fabric. This Aramid fabric, (AKA Kevlar™) is an exceptionally strong composite used mainly for aerospace and military applications, in bulletproof vests for example.
Bosiny construction shares similarities with traditional hollow wooden surfboards but differs in weight, flex, and strength. Our innovative techniques make our boards lighter with more flex and strength, eliminating the risk of push-through to the hollow cells below.
While we have not yet completed empirical stress and impact testing, Our boards have been thoroughly tested in heavy surf under the feet of pro’s and not one has been snapped, and no pressure dings in sight! Based on our own testing and materials research. We believe our boards are unbreakable surfboards, supported by our no-snap guarantee. This view is supported by Caina Souza, a professional surfer who has been surfing the same board for nearly a year, and so far has not made a mark on it!
When we consider the total volume of the surfboard, 99% of a Bosiny is organic, biodegradable material - this includes the air inside the core.
If we exclude air, our boards are made with 95% organic materials (wood and bio resin) with the other 5% being Aramid, fibreglass cloth and glue.
Bosinys' sustainable surfboards are explained further in our 'sustainability page'.
We use Gore self breathing vents that require no action from the user other than to replace once a year (see Board Care page for details).
Aramid is the general name for a class of heat-resistant and incredibly strong synthetic fibres. The most well-known aramid is Kevlar, which is used in bulletproof vests and body armour due to its exceptional strength and ability to disperse energy from impacts.
We use an aramid fibre sublayer to reinforce the wooden skin of our surfboards. This aramid composite acts as the "muscle" of the board, providing exceptional impact resistance that prevents damage like dings and cracks, and distributes forces away from any impact points, preventing pressure dings.
Our boards are meticulously handcrafted using highly technical construction methods. For 2024, we are strictly limiting production to just 50 individually-numbered boards per model as exclusive introductory editions.
Currently, orders through our online shop can only be shipped to destinations within Europe. For international orders outside of Europe, please send us an email at info@bosinysurf.com to inquire about availability and shipping rates to your location.
Our innovative construction method is significantly more time and skill intensive than conventional surfboard building methods. However, this premium technology results in boards with unmatched strength, durability and performance lifespans.
We believe our boards are a good investment. Here’s why.
Handcrafted - Every Bosiny board is skillfully crafted from Paulownia and Walnut wood, making it both unique and beautiful, as well as being a highly functional surfboard.
Longevity - With their durable wood-aramid construction, Bosiny boards are engineered to last decades, not just seasons.
Limited Edition - Our 2024 releases are limited to just 50 numbered boards per model, making them collectible items.
Resale Value - Because Bosiny boards do not ding like standard foam boards, it will still look like new after many sessions. This will result in a higher resale value compared to conventional boards, especially if waiting times for new boards increases in the future (likely).
In over two years of testing, we haven't snapped a single board, and our latest version is our strongest yet. In fact, we're so sure that our boards will not break, we're putting our money where our mouth is - with a 3-year no-snap guarantee.
If your Bosiny board snaps whilst surfing, within 3 years of purchase, we will replace it free of charge.
